If you’ve decided to breastfeed your little one, congratulations to you! We fully support any decision a mother makes when choosing how to feed her child but we have some really great tips for breastfeeding moms that we would like to share with you. A few mothers we know have contributed some much appreciated input to help new moms get through the first few weeks of your breastfeeding journey. So here you go:

It Will Get Better

Have you heard this before? We are sure you have because it is honestly the one thing a new breastfeeding mom needs to hear – it will get better. Those first few weeks are difficult, we know but there is a light at the end of the tunnel! One day you won’t feel any more pain or discomfort and realize that it was all worth it. All those unbearable feeds in the middle of the night, those extra painful latches that would bring you to tears were all worth it! We are only speaking the truth, breastfeeding is a challenge and certainly not for everyone. Once you get through the rough start, the joy of breastfeeding can begin!

The Sleepless Nights Will Pass

Zombie land. Newborn breastfeeding is a non-stop process that can last months and months. Feeding 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This can also be difficult for new mothers because you are so desperate for sleep. But just like everything else in life, this too shall pass. Soon you’ll be looking back on those sleepless nights and remember just how special those night feeds were. Just you and you little one, under a dim light, sharing a moment – just the two of you. Memories are a beautiful thing, aren’t they? Breast milk digests so quickly in babies that they are hungry every few hours. It’s not ideal but it is the healthiest thing for a growing baby. Liquid Gold they call it – and for good reason.

Benefits of Breast Milk

  • Reduces incidences of pneumonia, cold and viruses
  • Helps reduce the risk of developing chronic long-term conditions like type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, and celiac.
  • Lowers SIDS risk by about half!
  • Less risk of developing cancer in mom and baby
  • A custom-made supply to match exactly the nutritional and health needs of each individual child being breastfed! Seriously, your breastmilk can change composition moment to moment
  • It’s cheap!
  • You baby will be healthier, happier, and more independent in their dependence later in life
  • So many more!

How It Makes Life Easier

Breastfeeding is as simple as it gets. Generally it doesn’t require any bottles, sterilization, extra nipples (even though you may wish you had some at times), heater or anything else. Simply mama and baby. Perhaps a nursing blanket, depending on your public-breastfeeding-stance. But really that’s it. A quiet place to sit and relax, some back support, and a good latch is all you need to feed your baby successfully. It doesn’t cost a dime and can last as long as you want it to – long past 1 year! Extending your breastfeeding beyond 1 year brings an entirely new host of benefits to your growing toddler. Check out resources like La Leche League and the WHO (World Health Org) for more information of the added benefits. Even if you have to return to work, no problem! You can pump in most workplaces so that your child has the nutrients it needs.
